Harlan Rector was born and raised in St. Louis, Missouri. After finishing
high school, Harlan put himself through two years of college at the
Washington University School of Fine Arts. He was then drafted
in the military, serving two years in the army overseas in Austria
and Germany. Out of the service, he moved back to St. Louis where
he married his high school sweetheart. Harlan
put his artistic talents to use and began working as an artist in
an animation studio producing industrial training films. He then started
working in advertising as an art director/producer, creating
ad campaigns for some of the largest Ad Agencies in New York, Detroit
and Los Angeles. After 22 years in advertising, Rector decided to
switch careers. A natural at voice-overs, Harlan quickly
signed with an agent, and for the next 19 years worked as one of the
top voiceover announcers in New York.
Voicing hundreds of commercials, Harlan was chosen as the signature
voice of The History Channel for its first 4 years on the air.
Having recently moved back to St. Louis from the east coast, Harlan
set up an in-house studio with ISDN and MP3 capabilities, allowing
him to continue his voice work from home. In addition to voiceovers,
Rector has returned to his artistic roots as an accomplished portrait
artist. While
in New York, Harlan created, wrote and produced 39 episodes of a
dramatic radio series called L.I.G.H.T
. which aired on radio stations across the country and won an Angel
Award for excellence in broadcasting. L.I.G.H.T
. is currently in development as a half hour dramatic series for
television.
Recently, Harlan was inspired to write the ‘book’ and lyrics for a multi-media musical production titled, “A.D. The Musical”. The show is about the life of Jesus Christ, featuring 20 songs performed by biblical characters who were instrumental in His ministry. Two CD’s have been produced featuring songs from the musical.
